Tommy Traveler in the world of black history

Tommy Traveler in the World of Black History was created by the acclaimed illustrator Tom Feelings and published in 1991. The book originated from a series of comics that Feelings had produced for the New York Age newspaper during the 1950s. By compiling these stories into a graphic narrative format, Feelings aimed to provide young readers with an accessible, visually compelling entry point into the significant figures and events of African American history that were frequently omitted from standard school curricula.

The design of the book centers on Tommy, a young boy who discovers a collection of historical books in his attic, allowing him to travel back in time to witness key moments firsthand. Feelings, a master of black portraiture and narrative art, utilized his signature expressive ink work to bridge the gap between historical documentation and imaginative storytelling. The work was well-received by educators and critics for its ability to frame historical research through a relatable, humanistic lens, cementing its place as a staple in children’s literature focused on cultural heritage.
