Visual studio tools for office

Published in 2005 by Addison-Wesley Professional, Visual Studio Tools for Office was written by Eric Carter and Eric Lippert to address the burgeoning need for professional development guidance within the Microsoft Office ecosystem. As businesses increasingly moved toward custom enterprise applications, developers required a definitive resource to navigate the transition from older COM-based technologies to the more robust .NET Framework. The book emerged during a pivotal shift in corporate software development, aiming to provide a structured approach to building document-level and application-level add-ins.

The authors, both of whom were closely involved with the technology at Microsoft, crafted the text to serve as a comprehensive technical manual for developers leveraging Visual Studio 2005. The design focused on bridging the gap between standard Office automation and sophisticated .NET integration, prioritizing clarity for software engineers tasked with extending Word, Excel, and Outlook functionality. Upon its release, it was regarded as a core reference for the technical community, valued for its direct insights into the architecture of the platform rather than superficial tutorials.
