Where it came from
Released in 2013 by the label Querstand, this collection was produced to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the St. Thomas Boys Choir, or Thomanerchor, in Leipzig. The ensemble, one of the oldest and most famous boys' choirs in the world, holds a profound historical significance as the musical home of Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as its cantor for 27 years. This compilation serves as a curated retrospective of the festive music that has defined the choir’s liturgical and secular contributions over its eight centuries of continuous operation.
The release was designed to showcase the choir’s versatility and technical precision across various eras of choral music. The project reflects the careful curation of the choir’s contemporary leadership, aiming to bridge the gap between their medieval origins and their modern international profile. Critics and listeners received the collection as a definitive sonic archive of the Thomanerchor’s legacy, praising the clarity of the recording and the historical weight inherent in the performance of such a storied institution.
