Where it came from
Released in 1995 by Columbia Records, this soundtrack captures the stage production of A Christmas Carol that premiered at Madison Square Garden’s Paramount Theater. The musical was conceived by Mike Ockrent and Susan Stroman, with a score composed by Alan Menken and lyrics written by Lynn Ahrens. The production was intended to be an annual holiday tradition, revitalizing the classic Charles Dickens story through Broadway-style spectacle and memorable, character-driven songs that bridged the gap between traditional Victorian themes and modern musical theater sensibilities.
The musical was designed to offer a large-scale, family-oriented entertainment experience, featuring complex staging that utilized the unique capabilities of the Paramount Theater. Alan Menken, already celebrated for his work on Disney classics, employed a melodic, orchestrally rich style that aimed to evoke both the gloom of Scrooge’s isolation and the vibrancy of 19th-century London. Critics generally noted the work for its technical ambition and strong performances, particularly those of the lead actors who anchored the show’s emotionally demanding narrative arc.
