A Friend of a Friend serves as the debut studio album for Dave Rawlings Machine, a project led by guitarist and songwriter Dave Rawlings. Recorded at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville and released in 2009 on the independent label Acony Records, the album represents a distinct pivot from the work Rawlings produced as a longtime collaborator with Gillian Welch. It was captured largely on analog tape, intended to showcase a raw, collaborative aesthetic that favored live-room spontaneity over overdubbing, effectively blurring the lines between the primary artist and the supporting ensemble.

The album is noted for its collection of originals co-written with Welch and select covers, such as a reimagining of Bright Eyes' Method Acting.
