Afrique Mon Désir

Released in 2017, Afrique Mon Désir is a collaborative project led by South African singer-songwriter Laurinda Hofmeyr. The album emerged from a desire to bridge cultural and linguistic divides, featuring a fusion of contemporary African folk, chanson, and world music elements. It showcases a rich tapestry of instrumentation, driven by the contribution of Malagasy accordion virtuoso Régis Gizavo, whose presence adds a distinct rhythmic and melodic texture to Hofmeyr's compositions.

The album was produced independently, reflecting an intimate and authentic approach to songcraft. Laurinda Hofmeyr sought to explore themes of longing, belonging, and the African landscape, setting poems and original lyrics to intricate arrangements. Upon its release, the project was noted by critics for its emotive depth and the seamless synergy between Hofmeyr’s vocal delivery and the ensemble’s acoustic precision, marking it as a significant work within the niche of Southern African independent music.
