Where it came from
A Gift for a King was released in 2006 on The Gift of Music label, representing a collaborative effort between the ensemble Magdala and composer David Skinner. The project was conceived as a collection of polyphonic choral music intended to evoke the atmosphere of Renaissance courtly celebrations and sacred observances, reflecting the label's focus on historical and liturgical music traditions.
The album features arrangements that highlight the interplay between Skinner's modern compositional sensibilities and the period-specific vocal techniques employed by the choir. Critics and listeners within the early music community received the work for its focus on clarity and resonance, positioning it as an accessible entry point for those interested in the transition from late medieval to early modern vocal arrangements.
