Where it came from
Alegres y románticos marks a significant collaborative project between percussionist and bandleader Louie Ramírez and vocalist Ray de la Paz. Released in 1999 under the RYQZ label, the album serves as a testament to the enduring chemistry established between the two musicians during their earlier, critically acclaimed tenure with the Fania All-Stars and their influential 1980s collaborations. The record captures the stylistic transition of late-century salsa, bridging traditional tropical arrangements with the smoother, romantic aesthetics that defined the genre during the 1990s.
The album reflects a deliberate effort to maintain the integrity of classic salsa dura while embracing the melodic sensibilities of the contemporary romantic movement. Ramírez, known for his masterful arrangements and rhythmic precision, utilized this production to highlight de la Paz’s versatile vocal range. Upon its release, the collection was received by enthusiasts as a nostalgic yet fresh entry in the tropical music canon, solidifying the legacy of both artists as architects of the New York salsa sound.
