Where it came from
Arte y Majestad was released in 1997 by Mercury Records as a retrospective compilation celebrating the legendary collaboration between singer Camarón de la Isla and guitarist Paco de Lucía. Compiled years after the passing of Camarón, the album serves as a curated anthology of their most significant recordings, capturing the evolution of flamenco during the 1970s. It was designed to introduce a new generation to the seismic shift these artists brought to the genre, blending traditional flamenco roots with progressive, virtuosic experimentation.
The album art and track selection reflect the intense, transformative nature of the duo’s partnership, which revolutionized flamenco modernism. At the time of its release, the collection was received as a essential archival document, solidifying the status of the two artists as the definitive architects of contemporary flamenco. The presentation emphasizes the raw, emotive power of the recordings, focusing on the seamless synergy between Paco de Lucía's technical mastery on the guitar and the profound, soulful depth of Camarón's voice.
