Art Pepper Presents "West Coast Sessions!" Volume 2: Pete Jolly

The West Coast Sessions! series originated from a 1977 recording project led by alto saxophonist Art Pepper, intended to showcase the wealth of talent within the Los Angeles jazz community. These sessions were initially self-produced and released in Japan, but they remained relatively obscure internationally until Omnivore Recordings compiled and remastered the tapes for this definitive 2017 reissue series. The project was conceived as an informal, high-energy collaboration, capturing a moment when Pepper was enjoying a significant career renaissance.

This second volume spotlights pianist Pete Jolly, a staple of the West Coast studio scene known for his crisp, swinging style and versatility. The sessions were recorded at United Western Studios in Hollywood, with production overseen by Laurie Pepper. The music emphasizes the effortless chemistry between the two musicians, leaning into a hard-bop aesthetic that remains grounded in the cool jazz tradition of the era. Critics have praised the reissue for shedding light on these long-lost performances, noting that the intimate studio environment highlights the sophisticated interplay between Pepper’s lyrical saxophone lines and Jolly’s percussive, melodic accompaniment.
