Canciones y ensaladas

Released by Harmonia Mundi in 2012, this recording features the Ensemble Clément Janequin under the direction of countertenor Dominique Visse. The collection focuses on the 'ensalada' genre, a form of polyphonic Spanish secular music from the Renaissance characterized by its humorous, kaleidoscopic blending of languages, musical styles, and popular tunes. It serves as a definitive showcase for the group's signature interpretive style, which emphasizes the theatrical and often bawdy nature of 16th-century vocal music.

The ensemble, established in 1978, has long been recognized for its dedication to the French and Spanish Renaissance repertoire. Their approach on this album maintains a scholarly rigor while capturing the rhythmic vitality and wit intended by composers like Mateo Flecha the Elder. Upon its release, the recording was praised by music critics for its lively pacing and the ensemble's ability to navigate the complex counterpoint of the ensaladas, reinforcing the group's reputation for bringing historical scores to life with clarity and character.
