Where it came from
This 1990 release by the Musical Heritage Society features clarinetist Emma Johnson performing works by Weber, Crusell, Tartini, and Debussy, accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Yan Pascal Tortelier. The album served as a showcase for Johnson’s technical facility and lyrical interpretation, following her rise to prominence after winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1984.
The selection of pieces highlights the Romantic-era virtuosity characteristic of Weber and Crusell, contrasted with the impressionistic nuance of Debussy. The Musical Heritage Society, known for its subscription-based distribution model, played a significant role in making high-quality classical recordings accessible to American listeners during this period. The album was generally well-received by critics for its balance of technical clarity and expressive warmth, solidifying Johnson’s reputation as one of the leading clarinetists of her generation.
