Provenance

Where it came from

This compilation, released in 2012 under the BDJazz label, serves as a curated retrospective of Carmen McRae’s mid-century output. The set focuses on her most fertile creative period between 1954 and 1961, pulling together highlights from her transition from a rising club singer to a jazz vocal luminary. These years captured McRae’s sophisticated phrasing and her ability to navigate complex arrangements with distinct emotional restraint, solidifying her reputation as a singers' singer within the post-war jazz tradition.

The BDJazz series is noted for its distinctive, coffee-table book style packaging, which often integrates archival photography and biographical context alongside the musical discs. Designed by Bertrand Dubois, the collection aims to provide a tactile, historical immersion into the artist's discography rather than a simple digital reissuing of tracks. The release was designed to appeal to both long-time jazz enthusiasts and newcomers, presenting McRae’s technical precision and interpretative depth within the broader aesthetic framework of the BDJazz label's focus on historical preservation.
