Carmen-Suite - L'Arlesienne Suite

The 1992 Midget release of Georges Bizet's Carmen-Suite and L'Arlésienne Suite, performed by the London Festival Orchestra, arrived during a period when classical music was increasingly packaged for budget-conscious, mass-market retail. Midget was a label characterized by its utilitarian approach to repertoire, aiming to provide accessible, high-quality orchestral recordings to listeners who preferred affordable, no-frills physical media over boutique, prestige-label pressings.

The London Festival Orchestra has a long history of versatility, often serving as a reliable ensemble for thematic recordings and compilations intended for broad distribution. This specific release focuses on the enduring popularity of Bizet’s theatrical scores, which remain staples of the orchestral canon. The design of the release follows the minimalist aesthetic standard for Midget at the time, prioritizing clarity and affordability over the elaborate liner notes found in premium editions, reflecting the label's focus on the music's immediate utility.
