Carmen Takes The Lead ... Singing Traditional Hawaiian Favorites

Carmen Takes The Lead: Singing Traditional Hawaiian Favorites was released in 2013 on the Island Viking label, marking a dedicated effort by Carmen U'ilani Haugen to preserve and share the musical heritage of Hawaii. This collection serves as a sonic journey through the islands, focusing on the preservation of traditional melodies that define the local cultural landscape. The album was produced within a contemporary context where independent artists sought to provide listeners with authentic, acoustic-driven experiences that stand in contrast to modern pop productions.

The album's design and arrangement reflect a commitment to simplicity and sincerity, prioritizing the clarity of the vocals over complex studio layering. Haugen aimed to capture the essence of 'nahenahe'—a term describing music that is soft, sweet, and pleasing to the ear. The recording was well-received by those within the Hawaiian music community who value the continuity of island traditions, providing a nostalgic experience for both long-time residents and enthusiasts of traditional Pacific music.
