Chants Grégoriens / Liturgie Du Vendredi Saint

The Chœur Grégorien de Paris has long been dedicated to the authentic preservation of the liturgical repertoire, working to revive the monastic traditions of Gregorian chant. This specific recording, released under the Les Incontournables du Classique series in 2002, was produced to provide a meditative and historically informed representation of the Good Friday liturgy. The intent was to capture the austere, contemplative atmosphere of the service, relying on the ensemble's meticulous attention to the neumic notation and vocal phrasing characteristic of the Solesmes school.

The album serves as a testament to the ongoing interest in early music as a source of spiritual and aesthetic solace in the early 21st century. By stripping away instrumental accompaniment, the recording highlights the monophonic beauty of the male chorus, a hallmark of the ensemble's aesthetic approach. It was received as a standard reference for listeners seeking a rigorous and unadorned interpretation of the Passion of Christ, distinguishing itself through its commitment to the rhythmic nuances of the original Latin liturgical texts.
