Chants Grégoriens

Released in 2005 by the French label Wagram Music, this recording of Chants Grégoriens features the Estonian ensemble Hortus Musicus. The ensemble, founded in 1972 by Andres Mustonen, has long been recognized for its dedication to early music, ranging from the medieval and renaissance periods to avant-garde compositions. This particular collection was curated to provide a meditative survey of Gregorian chant, drawing upon the group's signature style which emphasizes historical performance practices and a vibrant, resonant approach to sacred vocal works.

The production aligns with a mid-2000s resurgence in interest regarding spiritual and early music compilations, which often utilized the label's aesthetic design to appeal to both classical connoisseurs and listeners seeking atmospheric, contemplative soundscapes. Hortus Musicus approached these traditional liturgical melodies not merely as museum pieces, but as living, evolving expressions of faith. By blending technical precision with a soulful, expressive delivery, the ensemble aimed to bridge the gap between ancient ecclesiastical traditions and the contemporary acoustic environment of the early 21st century.
