Where it came from
Released in 1991, this recording features the Wiesbadener Knabenchor, a prestigious boys' choir founded in 1961 that remains deeply rooted in the German choral tradition. The album serves as a focused collection of traditional German Advent and Christmas music, emphasizing the group's signature aesthetic of precise, ethereal vocal arrangements common to the Knabenchor style.
The album reflects a trend in the early 1990s of independent, regional choral recordings that sought to preserve liturgical and seasonal repertoire outside of the major label classical market. By opting for a private or small-scale release rather than a commercial major label distribution, the choir maintained artistic control, focusing on a repertoire that highlights the technical training and liturgical history of the Wiesbaden-based ensemble.
