David Popper High School Of Cello Playing (Forty Etudes), Op.73 - Dmitry Yablonsky

David Popper’s High School of Cello Playing, Opus 73, was composed in the late 19th century and remains a cornerstone of pedagogical literature for the instrument. Popper, a renowned virtuoso cellist of his era, designed these forty etudes to address specific technical challenges, ranging from advanced bowing techniques to complex left-hand shifting. His goal was to bridge the gap between technical exercises and concert repertoire, creating studies that were as musically satisfying as they were pedagogically rigorous.

This 2009 recording by cellist Dmitry Yablonsky for the Naxos label is highly regarded for its clarity and authoritative approach to Popper’s demanding score. Released as part of Naxos’s mission to provide comprehensive classical recordings at an accessible price point, the album is often cited by conservatory students and faculty alike. Yablonsky’s interpretation is noted for its precision and his ability to maintain a singing, lyrical quality throughout the technically dense, rapid-fire passages characteristic of the set.
