Where it came from
Released by Naxos in 1994, this recording of works by Jean Roger-Ducasse is part of the label's mission to broaden the reach of classical music through affordable, high-quality digital releases. The album features the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz under the baton of Finnish conductor Leif Segerstam, a partnership that sought to bring clarity and atmospheric depth to the French Impressionist repertoire.
Roger-Ducasse, a student and lifelong friend of Gabriel Fauré, is often overshadowed by his contemporaries, making this release a significant contribution to documenting his specific musical language. The design and production reflect the standardized, archival aesthetic of the Naxos 1990s catalog, which was received by critics as a vital entry point for listeners looking to explore orchestral works outside the traditional canon.
