Where it came from
Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Ninth Symphony between 1822 and 1824, intending to push the boundaries of the symphonic form by incorporating vocal soloists and a chorus in the final movement. The work premiered in Vienna in 1824, standing as a monumental testament to the composer's late style and his humanist ideals. Its legacy as a cornerstone of Western classical music has led to countless interpretations, serving as a primary benchmark for both conductors and orchestras worldwide.
This specific 1997 recording by the Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia under the baton of Béla Drahos was produced for the Naxos label. Part of Naxos's effort to provide high-quality, accessible classical recordings, the project featured soprano Hasmik Papian and mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose among its soloists. The recording is recognized for its straightforward, disciplined approach to Beethoven's score, reflecting the label's commitment to recording the complete symphonic cycle with a dedicated ensemble to ensure thematic consistency.
