Where it came from
This collection represents a significant archival release from Berlin Classics, issued in 1992 to highlight the historical performances of the Staatskapelle Berlin. The recordings showcase the deep Wagnerian tradition inherent to the ensemble, captured under the direction of Heinz Fricke. By assembling excerpts from major works like Parsifal and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, the release serves as a survey of the company's mid-century aesthetic and its technical mastery of the Romantic repertoire.
The featured performances benefit from the participation of baritone Ekkehard Wlaschiha, a singer renowned for his authoritative interpretations of Wagnerian villainy and gravitas. The production design and curation reflect an era of post-reunification interest in preserving the legacy of the German Democratic Republic's musical institutions. Critics at the time praised the clarity of the orchestral phrasing, noting that the selection offered a focused, high-fidelity entry point into the sprawling operatic narrative cycles of Richard Wagner.
