Der Nußknacker • Schwanensee • Dornröschen

Released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1997, this compilation gathers the suites from Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets: The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty. The recordings feature the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich, a legendary cellist whose rare forays into conducting emphasized deep emotional resonance and expansive phrasing. These performances were curated to showcase the lush, idiomatic sound of the Berlin ensemble as they navigated the demanding orchestration of the Russian romantic tradition.

The production serves as a testament to Rostropovich’s late-career artistic focus on the core symphonic and balletic repertoire. Deutsche Grammophon’s presentation reflects their signature approach to the era, utilizing clear, high-fidelity sound engineering to highlight the intricate woodwind textures and sweeping string arrangements essential to Tchaikovsky’s score. The release was well-received by classical music critics for its technical precision and the palpable chemistry between the conductor and the orchestra, establishing it as a reliable standard for listeners seeking a comprehensive yet refined introduction to these quintessential ballet suites.
