Where it came from
This recording features Markus Willinger performing a selection of organ music spanning four centuries on the historical instrument located in the Bamberg Cathedral. Produced under the Ambiente label, the project was conceived to showcase the tonal versatility and acoustic grandeur of the cathedral’s organ, an instrument that underwent significant restoration in the mid-20th century to reclaim its position as a central feature of German liturgical music.
The repertoire reflects a tradition of pedagogical and concert-oriented organ performance common in German cathedral settings, where the acoustic environment acts as a primary collaborator in the recording process. Willinger, who served as the cathedral organist, curated the program to demonstrate the technical capabilities of the instrument across varied stylistic periods, receiving moderate critical acknowledgment within audiophile circles for the clarity and spatial depth achieved in the cathedral's nave.
