Die Hügel vor den Städten

Released in 1994 on the independent label Nebelhorn Musik, Die Hügel vor den Städten represents a unique collaboration between the poet Ulrich Zieger and the musician Bert Wrede. The project emerged from the German experimental and spoken-word scene of the early 1990s, a period marked by a renewed interest in blending lyrical performance with atmospheric soundscapes. The album functions as a fusion of literary narrative and avant-garde composition, reflecting Zieger's introspective, often melancholy poetic voice set against Wrede's minimalist, text-sensitive musical arrangements.

The design and conceptual direction of the album emphasize the intimate, sparse nature of the recordings. By pairing Zieger’s evocative, landscape-oriented poetry with Wrede’s focused instrumentation, the creators sought to capture a sense of post-reunification existentialism that was prevalent in the cultural discourse of the time. The work was received primarily within niche literary and experimental music circles, noted for its stark aesthetic and the deliberate interplay between the rhythm of the spoken word and the underlying sonic textures.
