Die Historischen Behmann-Orgel Der Stadtpfarrkirche St. Martin In Dornbirn

Released in 2002 by the Austrian label Edition Lade, this recording serves as a technical and historical tribute to the Behmann organ housed in the St. Martin city parish church in Dornbirn. The instrument, a masterwork of late Romantic organ building by the firm of Josef Behmann, is celebrated for its unique tonal qualities and mechanical precision, representing a significant peak in Austrian ecclesiastical instrument design during the early twentieth century.

The recording features organist Rudolf Berchtel, an expert in the historical repertoire, performing works by the influential composer and organ virtuoso Sigfrid Karg-Elert. The selection highlights the organ's capacity for complex, nuanced expression, a hallmark of Karg-Elert’s post-Wagnerian style. The project was conceived as both an archival effort to capture the organ’s specific sonic profile and a scholarly exploration of how these compositions are best served by the instruments for which they were intended.
