Where it came from
Dona Francisquita is widely considered the masterpiece of the zarzuela genre, a traditional Spanish form of musical theater combining song and spoken dialogue. Composed by Amadeo Vives and premiered in 1923, the work is set in 19th-century Madrid and captures the vibrant, romantic spirit of the city’s culture through a sophisticated and melodic score.
The 1994 Valois recording is highly regarded by critics for its definitive performances, featuring the acclaimed tenor Alfredo Kraus and soprano María Bayo. Under the direction of Antoni Ros-Marbà, the production was praised for its commitment to the authentic zarzuela tradition, effectively balancing Vives's lyrical intensity with the technical precision required for such a celebrated operatic set.
