Where it came from
Released in 1991 under the Coloured Classic label, this recording of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 'Dornröschen' (Sleeping Beauty) captures a complete performance by the Philharmonia Cassovia, conducted by Andrew Mogrelia. The album emerged during a period in the early 1990s when budget-friendly classical labels were expanding, making full-length ballet scores more accessible to a wider audience. Mogrelia, known for his work with ballet companies, was commissioned to lead this performance to provide a structured and rhythmic interpretation suitable for both listeners and dance accompaniment.
The design of the CD reflects the aesthetic trends of early 1990s classical reissue and budget imprints, often featuring minimalist or evocative artwork aimed at shelf appeal. By pairing an established Eastern European ensemble like the Philharmonia Cassovia with a conductor specializing in the theatrical repertoire, the production aimed to offer a reliable, high-fidelity experience of Tchaikovsky's complex orchestration without the premium price of major-label recordings. It remains a standard representative of the period's efforts to democratize classical music through mass-market distribution.
