Dornröschenschlaf

Dornröschenschlaf was released in 2006 as part of the Bibliothek der Erzähler series, a prominent literary project curated by the Süddeutsche Zeitung. This collection aimed to make significant international literature accessible to a German-speaking audience by pairing high-quality audio productions with selected contemporary works, effectively bridging the gap between print media and the burgeoning audiobook market of the mid-2000s.

The production features the Japanese author Banana Yoshimoto, whose ethereal and introspective style characterizes the narrative, read by the acclaimed German actress Anna Thalbach. Thalbach’s approach to the material is noted for its delicate, nuanced delivery, which captures the melancholic and dreamlike atmosphere intended by Yoshimoto. The collaboration was well-received by critics for its sensitive interpretation of Yoshimoto’s prose, standing as a representative example of the publisher’s effort to elevate the audiobook format to a literary art form.
