Where it came from
This release features highlights from Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty, recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of André Previn. The performance captures the LSO during a period of celebrated collaborative work, reflecting Previn's penchant for lush, expansive readings of 19th-century Russian romantic repertoire. These specific recordings were originally captured during the mid-1970s and have remained staples of the orchestral catalog for their dynamic range and interpretative clarity.
The 2013 EMI Classics issue serves as a reissue within the label's broader efforts to keep these definitive analog-era masterworks available for modern audiences. André Previn was widely lauded for his ability to emphasize the symphonic complexity of Tchaikovsky's ballet scores, elevating them from mere stage accompaniments to sophisticated concert pieces. The design of this edition maintains the classic EMI aesthetic, focusing on the historical significance of the performance rather than contemporary stylistic trends.
