Where it came from
Released in 2009 by the Italian label Caligola Records, this album serves as a sophisticated jazz tribute to the prolific composer Carlo Alberto Rossi. Rossi was a central figure in the Italian music landscape of the mid-20th century, best known for penning the classic 'E se domani,' which became an international standard after being popularized by Mina. The project was conceived to recontextualize Rossi's melodic legacy through the lens of modern large-ensemble jazz.
The Verona Improvisers Jazz Orchestra was assembled to interpret these compositions, focusing on arrangements that blend traditional Italian pop sentimentality with the spontaneous energy of contemporary improvisation. The ensemble aimed to honor the structural integrity of Rossi’s work while allowing the soloists the freedom to deconstruct the familiar themes. Upon its release, the record was noted by jazz critics for its meticulous production and its successful bridging of historical Italian song craft with avant-garde orchestral arrangement.
