Everybody/s Somebody/s Nobody

Released in 2016 on the Clean Feed label, Everybody's Somebody's Nobody documents a collaborative meeting between experimental guitarist and composer Fred Frith and trumpeter Darren Johnston. The project emerged from a shared interest in spontaneous composition and the intersection of structured avant-garde music with more lyrical, tonal explorations, recorded primarily in a studio setting that highlights the nuanced interplay between their distinct instrumental voices.

The album serves as an example of Frith’s decades-long commitment to radical improvisation and Johnston's background in both jazz and contemporary classical music. Critics noted the intimate, almost sparse nature of the performance, highlighting how the duo utilized unconventional textures and wide dynamic ranges to challenge traditional concepts of melody and accompaniment. The release is widely regarded by fans of experimental jazz as a quintessential document of the improvisational landscape in the mid-2010s.
