Where it came from
The Original West End Cast Recording of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie was released in 2018, capturing the score from the hit musical that premiered at the Apollo Theatre in London the previous year. Inspired by the 2011 television documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, the production was crafted to bring the true story of Jamie Campbell to the musical stage, blending contemporary pop sensibilities with traditional narrative theater. The project was helmed by composer Dan Gillespie Sells, lead singer of The Feeling, and writer Tom MacRae, who sought to create an authentic, high-energy sound that mirrored the emotional arc of a teenager coming of age while navigating the drag world.
Musically, the recording leans into a modern pop aesthetic, deliberately moving away from the classic orchestral style of traditional musical theater to better reflect Jamie's internal world and the modern setting of Sheffield. The production received significant critical acclaim for its catchy, character-driven songs such as 'And You Don't Even Know It' and 'The Wall in My Head.' By securing a release through Broadway Records, the producers ensured the soundtrack reached a global audience, solidifying the show's reputation as a fresh and socially conscious addition to the contemporary West End repertoire.
