Where it came from
The musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie emerged from a 2011 BBC documentary titled Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, which captured the life of Jamie Campbell, a teenager from County Durham navigating his ambition to attend his school prom in drag. Composer Dan Gillespie Sells, the frontman of The Feeling, teamed up with writer Tom MacRae to translate this poignant, real-life story into a stage musical that celebrates self-acceptance and queer identity in a modern British industrial town.
Released in 2018 on the Absolute label, the original West End cast recording features John McCrea in the title role. The score is noted for its contemporary pop-theatre fusion, capturing both the emotional vulnerability of a young man finding his way and the high-energy, defiant spirit of the drag community. The design of the album reflects the vibrant, glitter-streaked aesthetic of the production, and it was warmly received as a fresh, vital addition to the British musical theatre canon, eventually earning a nomination for Best Original Score at the WhatsOnStage Awards.
