Fantasia - From Andrea Gabrieli To Johann Sebastian Bach

Released in 2023 by the Belgian label Ricercar, this recording features the Italian harpsichordist Andrea Buccarella performing a curated selection of fantasias. The project explores the stylistic evolution of the fantasia form across the Baroque era, spanning from the intricate works of Andrea Gabrieli to the profound architectural depth of Johann Sebastian Bach. The repertoire was chosen to highlight the versatility of the harpsichord and the expressive range inherent in the fantasia genre, which allowed composers to break free from strict counterpoint in favor of improvisation and technical display.

The album was recorded at the Chapel of the Castle of Le Rœulx in Belgium, an acoustic space chosen for its clarity and resonance, which serves to emphasize Buccarella’s nuanced articulation. The collection received positive attention for its virtuosic execution and thoughtful programming, with critics noting Buccarella's ability to navigate the distinct aesthetic shifts between the late Renaissance sensibilities of the Venetian school and the high Baroque mastery of the German tradition.
