Where it came from
Released in 2021 by Centaur Records, this recording features the acclaimed viol player John Dornenburg performing Georg Philipp Telemann's 1735 collection, 'Fantaisies pour la basse de viole'. Telemann originally composed these twelve fantasias as a pedagogical and artistic resource for solo viola da gamba, showcasing the instrument's melodic and polyphonic capabilities during the late Baroque period.
John Dornenburg’s interpretation is informed by his decades of expertise in historical performance practice. The recording aims to highlight the technical intricacies and the expressive, idiosyncratic nature of Telemann's writing for the instrument. It has been noted by critics and scholars as a significant modern contribution to the recorded repertoire for solo viola da gamba, preserving the pedagogical intent of the original compositions through a scholarly yet musical lens.
