Fidelio

This 2009 reissue by Sony Music captures the 1981 recording of Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, conducted by Kurt Masur with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. Produced during a period when the German Democratic Republic sought to emphasize its cultural heritage through the prestigious Gewandhaus tradition, the recording represents a significant contribution to the operatic canon. The performance features a distinctively German aesthetic, prioritizing the structural clarity and historical gravitas inherent in Masur's interpretation of Beethoven’s score.

The recording brought together a notable cast of the era, including Jeannine Altmeyer as Leonore and Siegfried Jerusalem as Florestan, whose vocal strengths were widely recognized for their suitability to the work's demanding heroic requirements. By the time of this 2009 release, the recording had already established itself as a reliable reference for listeners interested in the East German operatic school. Critics have generally praised the clarity of the choral work by the Rundfunkchor Leipzig and Masur’s disciplined, yet emotionally resonant, pacing of the narrative.
