Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2014 by the British reissue label Avid Jazz, this compilation is part of the extensive Four Classic Albums series. The set was curated to preserve the mid-century legacy of American vocalist Billy Eckstine, bundling four distinct long-playing records into a single budget-friendly package. By selecting albums that showcase his diverse vocal range and collaborations with heavyweights like Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, and Quincy Jones, the collection serves as a retrospective of his prime studio work from the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The design of this release follows the established minimalist aesthetic of the Avid Jazz imprint, which prioritizes the preservation of the original cover art and liner notes within a compact format. Avid Jazz aimed to provide high-quality digital transfers of hard-to-find vinyl for a modern audience, focusing on historical accuracy rather than decorative packaging. The release was received by jazz enthusiasts as a practical and economical way to acquire out-of-print sessions that define Eckstine's transition from bandleader to sophisticated solo crooner.
