Where it came from
Released in 1995 on the French label Montaigne, this CD features the ensemble recherche performing works by Stefan Wolpe alongside contemporaries Morton Feldman, Elliott Carter, and Johannes Schöllhorn. The album was conceived as a tribute to Wolpe, a mid-20th-century composer whose complex, idiosyncratic style bridged the gap between European modernism and the American avant-garde, serving as a pedagogical influence on figures like Feldman and Carter.
The recording showcases the ensemble recherche's commitment to the rigorous technical demands of contemporary chamber music. By juxtaposing Wolpe’s music with pieces by his students and colleagues, the disc provides a historical lineage of the avant-garde movement. It was produced as part of a series intended to document the evolution of modern classical techniques, garnering respect among musicologists for its precise interpretations and scholarly approach to the repertoire.
