For Stefan Wolpe (Choral Music Of Morton Feldman And Stefan Wolpe)

This recording was released by New World Records in 2000 as part of their ongoing effort to document and preserve 20th-century American avant-garde music. The album juxtaposes choral works by Morton Feldman and Stefan Wolpe, two influential composers who, while stylistically distinct, both navigated the rigorous landscape of modernism. By pairing Feldman’s characteristic textural focus with Wolpe’s more angular, polyphonic complexity, the release provides a scholarly look at the evolution of mid-century experimental vocal music.

The performances by The Choir of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, conducted by Harold Chaney, were curated to highlight the technical demands of these compositions. The project was conceived within the framework of the Recorded Anthology of American Music, a landmark initiative designed to offer definitive accounts of works that were often underrepresented in commercial catalogs. The recording was well-regarded by musicologists and contemporary music enthusiasts for its clean, balanced sound and its dedication to the austere aesthetic required by both composers.
