Fritz Reiner - Shostakovich / Strauss

This 2002 release from the Magic Talent label compiles historic recordings by conductor Fritz Reiner leading the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Reiner served as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1938 to 1948, a period during which he refined the ensemble into one of the most precise and virtuosic orchestras in the United States. These recordings capture his rigorous approach to interpretation, characterized by clarity, rhythmic control, and an uncompromising attention to orchestral color.

The disc juxtaposes the symphonic works of Dmitri Shostakovich and Richard Strauss, two composers for whom Reiner held a deep technical affinity. The release serves as part of a wider effort by various labels to reissue Reiner's mid-century broadcast and studio recordings, which have long been held in high regard by audiophiles and historians for their structural integrity. Critics often view these recordings as essential documentation of the 'Reiner sound' before he moved to Chicago and began his celebrated tenure with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
