Sergej Sergeevic Prokofiev Plays Prokofiev

This collection, released by the label Magic Talent in 1997, compiles historical recordings of Sergei Prokofiev performing his own piano compositions. These tracks originate from piano rolls and early studio sessions recorded during the mid-20th century, capturing the composer's unique interpretive approach to his own technical and lyrical works. The release serves as a primary document for musicologists and pianists, offering a direct window into the composer's intended rhythm, phrasing, and color.

The Magic Talent release is part of a broader trend of digitizing and reissuing early 20th-century Russian classical recordings for a modern audience. While the label is known for budget-friendly historical archival work, the material itself remains significant for its fidelity to Prokofiev's distinctive percussive yet melodic style. By presenting these performances in a digital format, the collection aims to preserve the authenticity of the composer's playing, which is frequently cited by scholars as a vital counterpoint to the more romanticized interpretations that gained popularity in later decades.
