Ginger

Ginger was released in 2011 as the debut solo studio album by French singer-songwriter Gaëtan Roussel, following the extended hiatus of his band, Louise Attaque. The record emerged during a period of transition for Roussel, who had spent the preceding years focusing on production work and collaborations, including his significant involvement in Alain Bashung’s final album, Bleu pétrole. Seeking a new sonic direction, Roussel moved away from the folk-rock textures of his previous projects toward a more polished, contemporary pop aesthetic infused with electronic elements.

The album was produced with a focus on blending organic instrumentation with experimental studio techniques, reflecting Roussel’s desire to explore personal narratives outside the constraints of a band dynamic. Upon its release, Ginger received critical praise for its accessibility and production quality, ultimately earning commercial success in the French market. It won several Victoires de la Musique awards in 2011, including Album of the Year, cementing Roussel’s position as a prominent figure in the French indie-pop scene.
