Where it came from
Released in 1999 by Direct Source Produits Spéciaux Inc., this collection serves as a compilation of traditional Quebecois folk music centered on the celebratory themes of New Year's Day. The project emerged from a period when specialty labels were actively curating archival and traditional recordings to preserve the regional dance music known as gigues and rigodons, which remain central to French-Canadian cultural identity.
The album functions as a thematic anthology rather than a singular artistic work, drawing on instrumental fiddle and accordion performances that define the genre's rhythmic drive. As a production by a label focused on high-volume budget compilations, the release was designed to provide an accessible entry point to festive folklore music, capturing the energetic, repetitive, and communal spirit essential to winter celebrations in Quebec.
