Where it came from
Released under the Philips label, this recording captures the historic tradition of the Christvesper service performed by the Thomanerchor, the centuries-old boys' choir of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. The ensemble, famously once led by Johann Sebastian Bach, maintains a profound connection to liturgical music through these seasonal performances, which serve as a cornerstone of the German choral tradition.
The recording features the Thomanerchor accompanied by the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum, under the direction of cantor Georg Christoph Biller and organist Ullrich Böhme. The production was intended to document the specific acoustic character and interpretative style of the choir within the sacred space of the Thomaskirche, receiving praise from classical music critics for its authentic capture of the ensemble's disciplined, historically informed vocal aesthetic.
