Where it came from
Released in 2000, Gold captures a specific moment in the collaborative relationship between German improvisational musicians Rüdiger Carl and Burkard Kunkel. The record emerged from the experimental free jazz and improvised music scene, characterized by a minimalist, stripped-back approach that relies on the interplay between Kunkel’s bass clarinet and zither and Carl’s distinctive saxophone and accordion work.
As a self-released project distributed independently by Carl, the recording reflects a personal approach to sonic exploration. The design is deliberately understated, emphasizing the raw, unadorned nature of the performances. The project is regarded as a modest but significant contribution to the pair's long-standing dialogue, reflecting their focus on texture and spontaneity rather than commercial viability.
