Gordon Jenkins With His Orchestra Presents Marshall Royal

This release, issued by the label Empire Musicwerks in 2006, serves as a retrospective compilation highlighting the collaborative synergy between arranger Gordon Jenkins and alto saxophonist Marshall Royal. Jenkins was widely regarded for his lush, string-heavy orchestrations, having famously worked with vocalists like Frank Sinatra, while Royal was celebrated as the quintessential lead alto player for the Count Basie Orchestra. This collection aims to capture the refined, big-band elegance that defined the mid-century American jazz landscape.

The album functions as a preservation effort, bringing together recordings that showcase the seamless interplay between Jenkins’ sophisticated harmonic textures and Royal’s lyrical, blues-inflected improvisation. Though the release arrived decades after the prime era of these artists, it was designed to appeal to jazz purists interested in the technical mastery of the swing and post-swing transition. It remains a focused study of the intersection between highly structured orchestral pop and the spontaneous soul of traditional jazz.
