Where it came from
This 2001 compilation album brings together the iconic soundtracks of two seminal Bollywood films from the early 1970s: Hare Rama Hare Krishna, composed by R.D. Burman, and Johny Mera Naam, composed by the duo Kalyanji-Anandji. These scores are considered pillars of Indian film music, marking a transition toward more contemporary, western-influenced orchestration and rhythmic styles that defined the sound of the decade. The release was part of a broader archival initiative by Universal Music India to reintroduce classic Hindi cinema soundtracks to a new generation of listeners on digital formats.
The musical design of these soundtracks represents a significant turning point in Indian cinema. R.D. Burman’s work for Hare Rama Hare Krishna is celebrated for its psychedelic textures and iconic tracks like Dum Maro Dum, while Kalyanji-Anandji’s compositions for Johny Mera Naam showcase their mastery of the quintessential melodic Hindi film song. By pairing these two distinct creative styles, this compilation serves as a capsule of the vibrant, transformative musical landscape of the 1970s, intended to preserve the legacy of these composers for a modern audience.
