Where it came from
Released in 2015 on the Rough Trade label, Holding Hands with Jamie serves as the debut studio album by the Irish noise rock group Girl Band. Formed in Dublin, the quartet emerged from a post-punk scene defined by a gritty, industrial intensity. The album was recorded in the wake of the band's growing reputation for visceral, chaotic live performances, capturing a sonic aggression that blends motorik rhythms with dissonant, abrasive guitar work.
The album's design and sound were shaped by the band's desire to push the boundaries of conventional rock instrumentation, utilizing pedal effects to distort guitars into mechanical textures. Frontman Dara Kiely’s lyrics, often delivered in a deadpan, stream-of-consciousness style, complement the album's jarring, high-tension atmosphere. Upon its release, the record was met with critical acclaim for its uncompromising originality, solidifying the group's position as a significant force in contemporary noise music.
