Where it came from
Released in 2016, this self-titled CD serves as an independent project by multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins. Jenkins, a former member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, crafted this album to highlight his deep engagement with the roots of American music, particularly blues, ragtime, and early jazz. By self-releasing the work, he maintained artistic autonomy to explore traditional folk forms through a lens that emphasizes the historical contributions of Black musicians to the American songbook.
The album reflects a design philosophy grounded in acoustic authenticity and archival preservation. Jenkins utilizes a minimalist production approach to capture the raw, percussive nature of his guitar and banjo playing, allowing the narrative weight of the traditional and original tracks to remain the focus. The physical CD release functions as an extension of his performance work, intended as a companion piece for audiences attending his live sets at folk festivals and intimate concert venues.
